One of the most common causes of complaints in the general population is lower back pain. There are several possible causes of this type of pain, among them lumbar strain, nerve irritation lumbar radiculopathy, bony encroachment, and more. When a person presents with lower back pain, the most likely reason is lumbar strain. This can be acute or chronic. Chronic lumbar strain is defined as persisting for over three months, otherwise the problem is still considered acute. The pain is experienced when ligaments, tendons and/or muscles are overly stretched, resulting tiny, microscopic tears in these soft tissues. Injury can be caused in any number of ways, including over use or incorrect use, or trauma. Dr. Harvey Finkelstein is an anesthesiologist and an expert in pain management, including solutions for dealing with and treating lower back pain.
